Psychedelic Assisted Therapy

Exploring Innovative Mental Health Solutions

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is an emerging therapeutic modality that combines the dissociative anesthetic, ketamine, with structured psychotherapy. Initially approved by the FDA as an anesthetic, ketamine has since gained recognition for its rapid-acting antidepressant effects when used "off-label" to treat mood disorders, particularly treatment-resistant depression. In recent years, KAP has become a promising option for individuals who have not found relief through conventional therapies.

Safety and Ethical Considerations

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a carefully monitored treatment that prioritizes patient safety and ethicality. While ketamine is a powerful tool in mental health treatment, it is essential to recognize that it can be habit-forming or addictive if not used responsibly. At our practice, ketamine is administered in a controlled, therapeutic setting under the supervision of trained professionals to minimize risks and ensure that the treatment is both safe and effective. Our approach is rooted in ethical standards, transparency, and a commitment to patient well-being.

The KAP Process: What to Expect

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy is not a standalone treatment but is most effective when integrated into a comprehensive mental health plan. Under the guidance of trained and licensed professionals, ketamine can facilitate deep introspective experiences, allowing patients to explore aspects of themselves that may be difficult to access through traditional talk therapy alone. This therapeutic process can lead to shifts in perspective, helping individuals navigate chronic psychological suffering and find relief where other methods have failed.

Before beginning KAP, each patient undergoes a thorough psychiatric assessment, including a detailed medical history and screening. This evaluation ensures that KAP is an appropriate treatment option and may involve coordination with the patient’s primary care physician or existing mental health care providers. Dr. Marcum is dedicated to working collaboratively with other members of your healthcare team, or she can serve as your primary mental health provider if needed.

A typical KAP treatment plan includes the following steps:

01

Intake Appointment

These initial sessions involve medical and psychological evaluations to tailor the treatment plan to the patient’s specific needs.

03

KAP Sessions

Patients typically undergo three to six ketamine sessions**. During these sessions, the therapeutic setting is carefully managed to maximize the benefits of ketamine's effects.

02

Preparation Session

Prior to ketamine administration, a preparation session helps set the therapeutic goals and intentions, creating a safe and supportive environment.

04

Integration Sessions

Following each KAP session, integration sessions are crucial to help process and incorporate the experiences into everyday life. These sessions ensure that the insights gained are translated into lasting change.

Dr. Marcum will work closely with you to determine the optimal number of sessions based on your individual progress and therapeutic goals.

**3 minimum KAP sessions are required, including, intake/consult, medicine session and integration.

Please inquire for pricing - insurance is not accepted for KAP medicine sessions. Superbill available only upon request.

Emerging Therapies: MDMA and Psilocybin

While ketamine is currently the most widely used psychedelic in clinical settings, research is rapidly expanding into other substances, such as MDMA and psilocybin. These compounds are not yet FDA-approved for therapeutic use, but they are being studied for their potential to treat various mental health conditions.

MDMA is under investigation for its efficacy in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Clinical trials have shown promising results, with MDMA-assisted therapy helping patients process traumatic experiences in a supportive environment, reducing the symptoms of PTSD significantly.

Psilocybin, the active compound in "magic mushrooms," is being studied for its potential to alleviate depression and anxiety, particularly in cases where traditional treatments have failed. Research suggests that psilocybin-assisted therapy can induce profound changes in perception, mood, and thought patterns, offering a new pathway for healing.

Though these therapies are not yet available outside of clinical trials, the growing body of research supports their potential as powerful tools in the treatment of mental health disorders.

At Marcum Psychological Services, we are committed to staying informed about these developments and will continue to explore how emerging therapies can be integrated into holistic treatment plans as they become approved.
